S.S.H.M.S.

The Scientific Society of Hellenic Medical Students (S.S.H.M.S.) was founded in 1993 and is a non-profit, non-governmental society. It consists of seven Chapters, one in each Medical Department of a Greek University (Athens, Alexandroupoli, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Crete, Larissa, Patras) and is staffed with over 4,000 registered members.

The Society operates with the aim of the scientific activation of medical students and their engagement with issues of educational and social interest. At the same time, through the various actions of S.S.H.M.S. and based on the selfless contribution of students, a work of scientific and humanitarian nature is successfully produced.

In its long-term course, we have developed stable collaborations with multidisciplinary associations, academic and non-academic organizations and groups, and with the support of our sponsors, partners and supporters, we have achieved and continue to achieve actions of a Greece-wide scope, such as the S.C.H.M.S (Scientific Conference of Hellenic Medical Students), the APOVASIS (Strengthening of Primary Health Care Units in more than 60 destinations throughout Greece), the EKYVE (Strengthening of the Health Care Units of Northern Greece), the ABCS3 (Applied Basic Clinical Seminar with Scenarios for Students – Thessaloniki), the Clinical Course of Internal Medicine and Surgery (CCIMS – Patras), the ECS (Emergency Cases School – Alexandroupoli) and many more. These actions have broadened the field of activity of S.S.H.M.S., have brought it into contact with scientific student groups of other Medical Schools and have secured its place in the academic community.

Additionally, during the academic year, per Chapter, numerous educational seminars are organized (stitching of a traumatic wound and basic clinical skills, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation seminars, emergency response, etc.), actions aimed at raising awareness and activating society (voluntary blood donations, collection of first aid items), seminars concerning medical but also sensitive medico-social issues (bone marrow donation, sexual health, medical taboos, etc.).
